Die Saison 2013-14 war so etwas wie der Wendepunkt hin zur aktuellen Erfolgsstory des TVI. Manager Tobias Hülsmeier übernahm immer mehr das Zepter und entschied sich den Kader in der Sommerpause zu verstärken. Mit Marcel Kosiol, Timo Völkerink sowie Patrick Olliges stießen gleich drei Akteure vom TuS Bramsche zum TVI, alle drei entwickelten sich zu absoluten Leistungsträgern. Hinzu kam mit US-Boy Courtney Belger ein absoluter Glücksgriff. Der Vorzeige-Profi sollte sich im Laufe der weiteren Jahre zu einem herausragenden ProA-Akteur entwickeln.
Schnell entwickelten sich die Ibbenbürener unter Coach Andreas Joachim vom Abstiegskandidaten zum Top-Favoriten der 2. Regionalliga. Dieser Rolle wurde der TVI mehr als gerecht, in beeindruckender Manier spazierten die Ibbenbürener zur Meisterschaft, zu der auch weiterhin viele TVI-Eigengewächse einen entscheidenden Anteil leisteten. Jannik Lübke, Waldemar Reich, Nico Kosel und Kai Patte machten den nächsten Entwicklungssprung, die Routiniers Lars Westphal, Christian Beuing und Tobias Mönninghoff gaben der Truppe auf und abseits des Platzes Halt und auch Thies Fischer und Simon Dolkemeyer wurden zu absoluten Leistungsträgern einer sehr homogenen Mannschaft, deren perfekte Saison mit einer krachenden Meister-Party endete.

What do you associate with TVI Basketball?
TVI Basketball signifies a family culture who’s willing to give everything for one another. When I played there my first two years it was amazing how the team and community embraced me. I started out slow and the city stuck behind me and helped me to feel comfortable. I have been in contact with and kept up with about 75 percent of the people I were around during my time in Ibbenbüren. I even had my host family come to my wedding. That was amazing. At some point it would be great to get back to TVI to see a game or play one day.
What do you actually do today – as sportsman and / or as business?
I’m still playing basketball and coaching kids. Like I Did in Ibbenbüren. We started 25 Eight Mentality Training which is our basketball training company. We have been able to pass down years of experience that my wife Ali and I have learned as well as mentor a lot of young adults. A lot of people from our old team at TVI reached out to support by purchasing our shirts and apparel. It really has been nothing but love and support for as long as I can remember. I am currently assistant coaching The Sydney Uni Flames where my wife plays in the WNBL in Australia. It’s been really fun. I’m thinking about playing in Australia this summer in order to prepare for returning back to Europe.

What do you think about the rise of TVI in the past decade is a thought that popped into my mind. I am extremely proud of how professional the club has become and the way the community has stayed behind the team each year. The games are always packed with fans and the brand of basketball is exciting to watch. It has surpassed what I ever thought it could be based off my first conversation I had with Diesel on my Facebook Messenger. That day changed my life which is why I still have the conversation we had from 2013. I’d hope that I was able to help in the positive incline of TVI the way that they did for me.
